The Superfood Myth


The term “superfood” has been used now for several years and is accepted by many people as factual — meaning that certain foods have super healthy benefits and without them, your body will suffer. This is far from an accurate characterization. Below is the list of the 10 top superfoods found on a pro-superfood website:
  1. Almonds
  2. Broccoli rabe
  3. Avocados
  4. Raw milk
  5. Wheatgrass
  6. Salmon
  7. Flaxseeds
  8. Blueberries
  9. Cinnamon
  10. Sweet potatoes

The position taken by the superfood advocates is that these foods are needed to somehow supercharge ones’ health, or that optimal health cannot be achieved without these foods, which are views that reflect a lack of understanding of health promotion. Consider the fact that most Americans are overweight and inflamed — this means that adding a cup of blueberries per day or adding cinnamon or garlic to meals, will NOT have a “super” effect on the system and convert an inflamed obese person into a DeFlamed obese person or somehow stimulate weight loss. The ALL Meat Diet


In a certain sector of society that is interested in diet, the “all meat” or “carnivore” diet has emerged as a fad diet that is both embraced and criticized. Not surprisingly, those that embrace and criticize the all meat diet, are missing a couple of key points that need to be understood.
Point 1 — For modern day people, it is difficult to conceptualize how difficult it was to acquire food in pre-modern times. For my entire life, handfuls of food have been readily available. The same holds true for my parents who grew up in the 1930s.
Before modern times, humans had to “exercise” for their food — foraging for vegetation or hunting animals of the land, water, and air. If you were from the Arctic Circle, your food options would be entirely different compared to those living in Arizona, which would be different than those living in Florida, which would be different than those living in Peru, which would be different than those living in the Amazon, etc. Read more…
