Factual Errors About Heart Disease In What The Health? And The Game Changers

If What the Health? and The Game Changers focused on the benefits of eating more vegetation, they could have been legit documentaries. I have written for a long time that we can be healthy, or DeFlamed as I call it, by eating a vegan or omnivore diet. I personally favor an omnivore diet that is mostly free of refined sugar, flour, and oils, which deliver absolutely no nutritional benefit and when consumed in excess, these refined calories promote obesity and chronic inflammatory states, such as the metabolic syndrome. Once established, the pro-inflammatory metabolic syndrome can promote heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and most other chronic conditions, including chronic pain.

So, the message in What the Health? and The Game Changers should have been to drastically reduce the consumption of refined sugar, flour, and oil calories, which make up almost 60% of all calories consumed by Americans. They decided to ignore this fact and blame meat-eating for causing the disease crisis that currently exists in America. They should have left meat, fish, chicken, and eggs alone and urged people to dump the refined food calories and eat large volumes of vegetation. As opposed to promoting veganism as a healthy option, both “fiction” movies took a radicalized vegan stance and blamed meat for all or our current ills. When people take a radical stance, they tend to make serious factual errors in their presentation of information, which is quite obvious when it comes to heart disease.

Why You Should Assure An Adequate Iodine Intake | Dietary Supplements

Iodine is most known for its relationship to the production of thyroid hormones. Not well known is that iodine also functions as a key antioxidant that protects cell membrane fatty acids from free radical attack. This is important for all cell membranes, however, in the context of disease risk, it is especially important for protection against breast cancer and prostate cancer (1,2).

The Japanese population consumes between 1000-3000 micrograms (mcg) per day (1), which is derived largely from seaweed and less from fish. It turns out that seaweed and fish are natural sources of both omega-3 fatty acids and iodine, which is one of the reasons why a traditional Japanese diet is so healthy and associated with minimal disease risk. Iodine naturally complexes with cell membrane fatty acids to create what is called an iodolipid, which is resistant to free radical attack compared to fatty acids without iodine (2).

In the United States, the upper limit recommendation for iodine is only 1100 mcg per day, with most Americans taking in between 135-340 mcg per day. The 1000-3000 mcg level consumed by the Japanese is a clear sign that people can tolerate more than 1100 mcg without concerns. This amount of iodine is likely to be problematic for only people with hypothyroidism caused by Hashimoto’s disease (1). Be aware that some people with Hashimoto’s cannot tolerate any iodine supplementation.

The National Institutes of Health has an Office of Dietary Supplements that published a Fact Sheet about iodine (3). It describes a study wherein researchers randomly assigned 111 women (18–50 years of age) with fibrosis and a history of breast pain to receive tablets containing 0 mcg, 1,500 mcg, 3,000 mcg, or 6,000 mcg of iodine per day. After 5 months of treatment, women receiving doses of 3,000 or 6,000 mcg iodine had a significant decrease in breast pain, tenderness, and nodularity compared with those receiving placebo or 1,500 mcg iodine. The researchers also reported a dose-dependent reduction in self-assessed pain. None of the doses was associated with major adverse events or changes in thyroid function test results. As the upper limit in the United States is only 1100 mcg, this NIH Fact Sheet recommends that doses of 1,500-6000 mcg per day should only be used under the guidance of a physician (3).

Fish oil supplements do not contain iodine because the distillation process that concentrates and purifies the oil serves to eliminate pollutants, heavy metals like mercury, and iodine. Taking supplemental iodine appears to be a good choice for most people, especially for those who take supplemental fish oil.

Impulse Control: For Overeating And Other Vices

Overeating is the primary impulse control issue from which people suffer. A huge 70% or more of the adult US population is either overweight or obese.

This video briefly outlines how our brain is wired to drive us to seek pleasure, such as overeating. If we do not gain control over the pleasure seeking system of our brain, then the likely outcome is obesity and all the problems that go along with it.

To over come eating and other vices, we need to understand the nature of the pleasure-seeking system that is hard-wired into the human nervous system. Watch this video and read the blog to know about the pathway in the human brain so you can picture it in your mind when the impulse to eat kicks in. Osteoarthritis is "heart disease" of our joints

At first glance, the title of this blog may seem like a preposterous notion; however, it is a fact. Years ago, osteoarthritis (OA) was misperceived to be a wear-and-tear condition of joints, a myth that is still perpetuated today…however, we now know that OA is actually a chronic inflammatory state within joint tissues. Years ago, we also misperceived that heart disease was simply a buildup of cholesterol and other substances on top of the wall of an artery…now we know that heart disease is actually a chronic inflammatory state in the within the artery wall.

Osteoarthritis is a chronic inflammatory condition of our joints that is chemically identical, on practical level, to heart disease. This has been known for a long time. For all practical purposes, the chemistry of osteoarthritis and atherosclerotic heart disease is identical. The view we should take is as follows: osteoarthritis is “heart disease” of the joints and heart disease is “osteoarthritis” of arteries. The difficulty that most have when considering this fact is that, to the naked eye, joints and arteries are very different structures.

Can Fish Oil Cause Inflammation?

I recently wrote an article for magazine, which discussed chronic inflammation in relation to autism. Part of the pro-inflammatory state involves an excess of omega-6 fatty acids. So, part of the DeFlaming approach involved taking some omega-3 fish oil.

It is important to understand the right supplementation method of taking Fish Oil. A 1000 mg capsule of fish oil does not mean you are getting 1000 mg of omega-3 fatty acids. For example a 1200 mg capsule of the Anabolic Labs fish oil product contains 600 mg of omega-3 fatty acids. You always want to make sure you are going by the omega-3 content, not the total oil amount.

The typical recommendation for fish oil supplementation is to get 1000-3000 mg of omega-3 per day. For perspective, there is 9 calories per 1000 mg of a fat or oil. So if you were to take 2 fish oil capsules that contain 1200 mg of total oil per capsule, you would be taking 2400 mg of total fish oil, which amounts to 21.6 calories. This would deliver 1200 mg of omega-3 fatty acids, which means that a little more than half of the 21.6 calories are omega-3 fatty acids. This is clearly not a lot of fish oil or omega-3s.

After the article get published, I was contacted by a reader who claimed that taking 1000-3000 mg of fish oil per day would promote inflammation because the omega-3s would oxidize. So, can fish oil really cause inflammation?

The Superfood Myth

The term “superfood” has been used now for several years and is accepted by many people as factual – meaning that certain foods have super healthy benefits and without them, your body will suffer. This is far from an accurate characterization. Below is the list of the 10 top superfoods found on a pro-superfood website:

Almonds, Broccoli rabe, Avocados, Raw milk, Wheatgrass, Salmon, Flaxseeds, Blueberries, Cinnamon, Sweet potatoes

Now, have a look at the list of 10 top superfoods from the National Health Services in the UK, which correctly criticizes the characterization of these foods as “super”:

Blueberries, Goji berries, Chocolate, Oily fish, Wheatgrass, Pomegranate juice, Green tea, Broccoli, Garlic, Beetroot

The position taken by the superfood advocates, is that these foods are needed to somehow supercharge one’s health, or that optimal health cannot be achieved without these foods, which are views that reflect a lack of understand of health promotion.

Consider the fact that most Americans are overweight and inflamed – this means that adding a cup of blueberries per day, or adding cinnamon or garlic to meals, will NOT have a “super” effect on the system and convert an inflamed obese person into a DeFlamed obese person or somehow stimulate weight loss.

Before food modernization, remote societies were capable of eating only that which they grew, foraged, or hunted, and these societies were remarkably free of the degenerative diseases compared to their prevalence in industrialized nations. Arctic Eskimos largely ate fatty meats, such as whale, walrus, and seal. The Masai tribe in Africa lived primarily on meat, milk, and blood. Neither of these populations ate a single superfood and each population was healthy for generations.

Consider hypertension, a very common condition in America. Fasting studies have demonstrated that a 2-week water fast can normalize hypertension or reduce it to pre-hypertension levels (1,2). In this case, no foods were consumed at all, just water.

So the notion that we need a superfood to achieve a healthy state or to reverse an unhealthy state is obviously an overblown claim. The goal should be to avoid pro-inflammatory foods and replace these with anti-inflammatory foods, such as those incorrectly called superfoods, and only eat enough calories to achieve and maintain a normal body weight. The simple details of this concept and process are outlined in The DeFlame Diet.

Cardiovascular Health Promotion - Nutritional Supplements

There are many cardiovascular conditions from which people suffer, most of which are caused by chronic inflammation, including atherosclerotic-induced heart attacks, peripheral artery disease, erectile dysfunction, and hypertension. Back pain can also be promoted by atherosclerosis of the arteries that feed the spine.

The use of aspirin (salicylates) by patients demonstrates the inflammatory nature of cardiovascular disease. Interestingly, vegetables and fruit contain low doses of salicylates, and these foods are recommended by the American Heart Association for heart health.

Regarding supplements, magnesium, fish oil, vitamin D, botanical/spices, and coenzyme Q10 are all known to offer cardiovascular health benefits via their anti-inflammatory actions. So the best nutritional supplements for cardiovascular health promotion are included in the Basic and Advanced Health Promotion programs.

Prostate Health Promotion - Nutritional Supplements

There are three main conditions that compromise the prostate gland: prostatitis, benign prostatic hypertrophy, and cancer.

In particular, prostate hypertrophy and cancer are known to be promoted by ongoing chronic inflammation, long before any symptoms begin. So, in addition to whatever pharmaceutical or surgical treatments that may be used, it is important to include health promotion (deflaming) activities as well.

These activities include the anti-inflammatory diet as described in the Diet Book and the Basic or Advanced supplement programs.

Additionally, certain prostate-health specific nutritional supplements have been identified, which are found in Prostana. These nutrients include Saw palmetto, nettle and pygeum.

Joint Health Promotion-Nutritional Supplements

Joint pain is one of the more universal problems that afflict both men and women and the majority suffer at one point or another. The primary joint health problem is pain and pain is caused by inflammation.

Eating “inflammatory” “joint pain” foods should be avoided and taking either the Basic or Advanced Health Promotion supplement programs is a good choice.

Regarding specific joint health nutrients, glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate have been shown to have anti-inflammatory and joint protective effects. Glucosamine/chondroitin are the building blocks for proteoglycans, function to imbibe water like a sponge, allowing for joints to resist compression without injury.

Joint space loss as we age is known to be caused by a loss of proteoglycans, secondary to chronic inflammation and inappropriate joint loading. Consequently, supplemental glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate have been popular for years for the purpose of reducing pain and preserving joint space.

Digestive Health Promotion - Nutritional Supplements

Digestive symptoms are extremely common in women and men. Women tend to suffer with irritable bowel symptoms, such as constipation and diarrhea, while men tend to suffer with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Fill up the gut with pro-inflammatory foods is not a wise daily choice for people with gastrointestinal symptoms. Accordingly, an anti-inflammatory diet is a positive choice.

For the digestive organs and tissues to be healthy, they require the same anti-inflammatory nutrients as the rest of the body. Therefore, the Basic and Advanced Health Promotion supplements are also beneficial for the gut.

In recent years, more and more research is demonstrating the gut health can be improved by supplementing with probiotics.

Bone Health Promotion- Nutritional Supplements

Bone health is a misunderstood topic. When people think about bone health, they focus extensively on calcium and little on anything else. This is a mistake. Bone should be viewed as a multifunctional organ, and like other organs and systems, bone health is substantially impacted by chronic inflammation.

The best way to promote bone health from a nutritional perspective is to eat anti-inflammatory as described in The DeFlame Diet book and to take either the Basic or Advanced Health Program supplements.

An additional supplement that may be especially beneficial for bone is microcrystalline hydroxyapatitie calcium (MCH-Cal), which is found in Osatate-Calcium Complex. MCH-Cal is thought to be the best calcium supplement for bone health as it is derived from whole bone and contains an organic and inorganic component.

DeFlame Enterprise | DeFlaming Supplements was started by Dr. David Seaman, the first person to author a scientific paper that specifically hypothesized that diets can be pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory.

Dr. Seaman coined the term "DeFlame" as a simple educational tool to help better understand the benefits of replacing pro-inflammatory foods with anti-inflammatory vegetables, fruit, nuts, and roots/tubers. He first identified that diet promotes inflammation based on research published in the 1970s and 1980s. Most have only begun to see this relationship in recent years. In contrast, Dr Seaman has written multiple articles and chapters on this topic over the past 25 years.
